To help raise awareness, Today (june 26th) most major U.S. net radio broadcasters (including many AM/FM stations which stream their broadcast on the net) will be running with either static or some ambient noise.

I don't run a net-radio station, or I'd join them. I do listen to a lot of net-radio, and don't want to see that go away. So I did this instead.

The basic problem is that one part of the government has mandated all net radio stations to pay a retroactive song/listener fee, meaning that most stations will go out of business on July 15th, owing in the neighborhood of 1 million dollars each to record companies. The senate has a bill that's attempting to fix the problem, but there's just not much time left.

Sorry if anyone was bugged, but this is something that really matters to me. :P

p.s. I still have an FM player in my car, but I barely use it. ;)

er...I had this uploaded two days ago, but accidentally set the display time at 10pm.

It's fixed now, but those of you looking to get your early morning fix were out of luck.

Pandora is my music collection, basically. I'd hate to see it go.

Plus it's just ridiculous the way they're taxing it more all of a sudden... you can do the same amount of piracy with normal radio!

Actually, you can do way more with normal radio, because the songs are often streamed in a lower quality than transmission, and there's absolutely no controls attempting to stop you from grabbing an AM/FM transmission wholesale and picking the songs out of it.

And that's the other thing that makes this outrageous. AM/FM radio plays a fixed fee per song, regardless of how many people tune in. They're treating internet like it's somehow different than broadcast radio (even an AM/FM's stream is treated this way). It's just silliness.
